Wonky hole is an Australian term for a submarine underground discharge, a freshwater spring flowing from the seabed. Freshwater from the mainland exiting is full of nutrients and minerals. This creates pristine environment around the hole and attracts various sea creatures such as octopus, stingray and popular fish such as Nannygais and Red Emperors.
Wonky holes are found in the Great Barrier Reef and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Around 200 holes are known along the coast between Townsville and Cape York, Queensland.
The term Wonky Hole is derived from the old tale of fisherman, that trawling boats used to go wonky and sometimes were capsized in the middle of the ocean without definite reasons. Turns out, net was caught on rubble around the hole and dragged the boat down.
